Due to the escalation of COVID-19 globally, the University of Notre Dame has made the decision to prohibit all University-reimbursed international travel for students, faculty, and staff for summer 2020 and until further notice. In line with this directive, the 2020 Creating a World Without Nuclear Weapons Summer Seminar has been postponed.

A Week-Long Seminar Focused on Developing the Next Generation of Nonproliferation Specialists and Activists

Purpose
This week-long seminar is part of a larger project to revitalize and strengthen the voice of the Catholic community in the United States and beyond in the debate on nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament. The project aims to empower a new generation of Catholics – Church leaders, scholars, and students – to contribute to wider efforts to further reduce and ultimately eliminate nuclear weapons. Applicants must be rising college sophomores through graduating seniors, and select graduate students, that commit to attend the entire institute, May 25-29, 2020. The seminar aims to increase the capacity of participants in their cross-disciplinary knowledge base and in the ethical foundation of arguments for nonproliferation and disarmament. It will also introduce them to key arms control institutions in Washington.

This Project is co-sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, Keough School of Global Affairs, University of Notre Dame, the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs at Georgetown University, the International Federation of Catholic Universities, the Notre Dame International Security Center, Office of International Justice and Peace, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the Catholic Peacebuilding Network.
Method
This seminar is an intense academic and praxis week that aims to provide a comprehensive view of the history and current controversies surrounding global nuclear proliferation and US policy. Particular attention is given to the challenges of this current moment of nuclear weapons modernization and expansion, and to the evolving Catholic position on nuclear weapons and disarmament. Lecturers and other resource persons will be experts from academia and practice in the field of arms and security. Hands-on exercises, discussions, and application will be an integral part of the program.

Our faculty will be joined by policy specialists and experts on nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament from Washington, D.C., arms control organizations. Specific speakers will be announced at a later date.
