Israel's Legal and Political Crisis: Between a "Governmental Coup" and a "Legal Reform"
Due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has been canceled.
Israel's government is making major amendments to the country's constitutional laws. Supporters of the reform, such as the strong and newly-created right-wing coalition, argue that it will lead to a more stable government that better represents the people's interests. Critics, meanwhile, fear that it will erode the country's democratic principles and concentrate too much power in the hands of a single party or individual. Others bemoan that such reform will only further deteriorate Israel’s reputation; already it disregards internationally accepted democratic principles given its occupation of the West Bank and seizure of Gaza.
This virtual flash panel will bring together faculty and experts to reflect on the major political and legal challenges that Israel currently faces. Panelists will examine the historical, cultural, and political contexts that have led to this moment. Understanding the nuances and complexities is essential as legal and political changes being planned have the potential for major ramifications to the region.
