You're Studying What? Exploring What it Really Means to Study Peace

Have you seen a reference to peace studies and wondered, "What is heck is that? How can someone study peace?"

Peace studies is often misperceived as either purely theoretical and without application or, in contrast, as lacking rigor and a firm grounding in theory. In reality, peace studies is an established interdisciplinary academic field with its own literature, established curriculum, and pedagogical tradition. It has an active community of scholars who conduct research into: processes that demand justice and promote healing; the root causes of violence in all its forms; strategies to prevent, end, and transform violent conflict; and approaches to promote structural and institutional change at local, national, and global levels. At Notre Dame, the Undergraduate Program in Peace Studies offers students a way to join this important field and equips them to be leaders in peace and justice scholarship and practice.
