In response to the spread of COVID-19 in the United States, the Kroc Institute has decided to cancel this year's Summer Institute.

The University of Notre Dame's Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies invites you and your team to apply for the 12th Annual Summer Institute for Faculty in Peace Studies, June 8-12, 2020.

The Summer Institute brings together teams of academics who want to launch peace studies programs at their colleges or universities; strengthen or develop a new dimension to peace studies programs; or move established peace studies programs to the next level of design and rigor. Since its inception, the Summer Institute has hosted 400+ attendees from over 100 different institutions—including 23 Catholic colleges and universities—across 6 continents.

Highlights:

  • engage with leading thinkers on contemporary issues in peace studies practice, research, and teaching
  • explore the pedagogical, administrative, and communications challenges of developing peace studies courses and programs
  • collaborate with teams of faculty on course development while benefiting from the ideas and expertise of others in the field

The University of Notre Dame's Kroc Institute, a leading center for interdisciplinary peace research and peace studies education, is committed to the strengthening of peace studies programs and the training of those who teach—or wish to teach—in this field.

Director and Staff

The Summer Institute is directed by George A. Lopez, an internationally-recognized authority on peace studies program development, former Vice President of USIP and The Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Professor Emeritus of Peace Studies at Notre Dame. The Summer Institute is staffed by a dozen faculty and staff from the Kroc Institute.

Schedule

The Institute begins in the late afternoon on Monday, June 8, and ends at noon on Friday, June 12. Mornings will feature plenary sessions and workshops on critical themes in the field and program development. Afternoon sessions will allow participants to work with their respective teams on campus plans.

Costs

Registration is $225/person. This includes 8 meals served as part of the Summer Institute programming. 

Housing costs are as follows:

  • If you choose to stay off campus, you will need to make your own reservations and be able to provide your own transportation.  The cost is paid directly to the hotel.
  • If you will be staying from Sunday to Thursday, the fee for housing in a single dorm room on campus will be $347.50
  • If you will be staying from Monday to Thursday, the fee for housing for a single dorm room on campus will be $278.00

Applications for Summer Institute 2020 are now closed. 

Due to the lengthy visa application process for coming to the United States, we encourage all international applicants to apply to the Summer Institute by December 15. If accepted, we will provide a visa support letter by early January 2020. This new urgency is based on the experience of Summer Institute applicants being denied visas for varied reasons related to processing time or receiving visas too late to make travel arrangements.
