Marching Orders: Exploring the Mediation Mandate
Laurie Nathan
Professor and Director of the Center for Mediation in Africa at the University of Pretoria in South Africa; Kroc Institute Visiting Research Fellow
Very little research has been done on the mediation mandate. The neglect is significant because the mandate determines the mediator’s objectives, regulates his/her strategy and influences whether or not the conflict parties are receptive to the mediator. Nathan breaks new ground by identifying and analyzing the different types of mediation mandate and the disputes and tensions they generate.
