Transitional Justice in Colombia

On August 24, 2016, the Colombian government signed an agreement with FARC rebels to end 50 years of bloodshed. At the invitation of Colombian President Santos, Prof. Doug Cassel was invited to be a member of the negotiating team responsible for crafting a delicate justice framework for the post-war nation – one that attempted to satisfy international standards while giving rebel groups enough protection to allow them to lay down their arms.

In light of the Colombian peoples' surprising rejection of the peace agreement in the recent plebiscite, work resumes to find a solution. In this presentation Prof. Cassel will address the challenges that now face a Colombia in the midst of a difficult transitional period.

Following the presentation, Andrés López, J.S.D. candidate in international human rights law and native of Colombia, will engage Prof. Cassel in a “question and response” dialogue to further explore the questions of justice and peace.
