EnPax Semester Internship

Each semester, the Undergraduate Program in Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute selects one undergraduate at Notre Dame for a remote, semester-long internship with the Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPax).

Environmental peacebuilding integrates natural resource management into conflict prevention, mitigation, resolution, and recovery in order to build resilience in communities affected by conflict. EnPax is a membership-based organization that engages practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers working on issues related to the environment, conflict, and peace.

This 3.0 credit internship is a unique and exciting opportunity for students to gain professional work experience while learning about an emerging field of research and practice from those directly involved. Students will develop their skills in applied research and praxis, strengthen their ability to network with peacebuilding practitioners and organizations, and learn more about environmental peacebuilding.

The internship consists of approximately 10-12 hours per week contributing to an active initiative led and supervised by EnPax alongside ongoing academic engagement supervised by the internship director and culminating in a final written work. Students are assessed with a letter grade based on performance and learning across both components.

The specific responsibilities will vary depending on the area of need identified by EnPax for a given semester. The current project focuses on building out a database of three hundred environmental peacebuilding projects supported by the United Nations Global Environmental Facility fund. Students will also assist with webinars, workshops, reports, and consultations that share the products developed using this resource.

Dates: January 11, 2027 - May 7, 2027

Location: Remote, from Main Campus

Funding: None required. Students receive 3.0 credits, letter-graded.

Eligibility: Any rising sophomore, junior, or senior with a strong interest in peacebuilding and a desire to gain knowledge of environmental work may apply. Preference will be given to students who have taken (or are taking) IIPS 20101 Introduction to Peace Studies and/or who are pursuing a peace studies supplementary major or minor. Specific environmental experience is not required, but applicants must be planning to enroll on the main campus for the duration of the semester. 

Requirements: The selected intern must enroll in IIPS 45000 for 3.0 credits by the registration deadline for the spring term, which is Tuesday, January 19, 2027. Throughout the semester, the student is required to document 10-12 hours of project work for EnPax and to meet weekly or bi-weekly with the supervising faculty director. The intern will also submit either a final report or a research paper to the faculty member no later than the final class day of the semester.
