Bahar Baser
The Kroc Institute is pleased to welcome Bahar Baser as a visiting research fellow during the Spring 2019 semester.
Baser is Associate Professor at the Centre for Trust, Peace, and Social Relations at Coventry University in the United Kingdom and an Associate Research Fellow at the Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. She holds a Ph.D. in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Her research interests include ethno-national conflicts, political violence, conflict resolution, migration and diaspora studies, and she is also the editor of a book series on Kurdish Society, Politics and International Relations published by Lexington Books.
While at the Kroc Institute, Baser will be writing a book about the participation of diasporas in peacebuilding and development using the Kurdish diaspora as a key case study.
This semester, Baser has already published an edited book, Methodological Approaches in Kurdish Studies: Theoretical and Practice Insights from the Field (Rowman & Littlefield). The volume brings together 13 contributions on the challenges faced by researchers when conducting fieldwork in settings with deteriorating security, increasing state control, and inter-ethnic conflict. The book focuses specifically on research conducted in the Kurdistan region in Iraq, Syria, and Turkey and among Kurdish diaspora members in Europe.
In addition to the book, Baser is co-editor, with Amira Halperin, of, “Diasporas from the Middle East: Displacement, Transnational Identities and Homeland Politics,” a special issue of the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies published in February 2019, and the news article “Diasporic Activism of Jewish Kurds from Iraq in Israel,” published by the Council for British Research in the Levant during her time in residence at the Kroc Institute.
Each year, the Visiting Research Fellows Program brings outstanding scholars at the post-doctoral and senior scholar level to the Kroc Institute to conduct research, collaborate with faculty and participate in the life of the Kroc Institute and Notre Dame.
Applications for 2020-2021 Visiting Research Fellows will be accepted beginning on September 1, 2019.
