Today is the 93rd birthday of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president emeritus of Notre Dame.

During his 35 years as president of Notre Dame, Fr. Ted was a leading force in major social issues ranging from civil rights to nuclear non-proliferation to Third World development. Since his retirement, he has remained active in the Notre Dame institutes he founded, including the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Fr. Ted reached another milestone recently at Kroc commencement weekend ceremonies:  he has now handed out peace studies certificates to nearly 1,100 graduates of the undergraduate and master’s programs.
