The Kroc Institute announces plans for an interdisciplinary conference, “Building Sustainable Peace: Ideas, Evidence, Strategies,” to be held November 8-10, 2019, on the University of Notre Dame campus.
The conference grows out of the Institute’s five-year strategic plan, launched in 2018, which emphasizes an Institute-wide commitment to enhancing cutting-edge peace studies research and practice. The three-day conference will bring together multidisciplinary scholars, educators, practitioners, and graduate students working in the peace studies field.
Confirmed keynote speakers for the conference include: John Paul Lederach, Professor Emeritus of International Peacebuilding at the Kroc Institute; Séverine Autesserre, Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University; sujatha baliga, Director of the Restorative Justice Project and Just Beginnings Collaborative Fellow at Impact Justice, and Sergio Jaramillo, Colombia’s Former High Commissioner of Peace and Colombian Ambassador to Belgium.
The conference content will be organized around four key themes: understanding violence, peacemaking, confronting injustice, and building peaceful societies.
Beginning today, the conference planning committee welcomes the submission of proposals for single paper presentations, organized panels, and roundtables that focus on one of the conference’s four themes and that engage with cutting-edge peace research or practice. The planning committee is particularly interested in submissions that explore tensions and/or synergies between theory and practice, the field and the classroom, and the different local, national, regional, and global orientations towards peace.
Select papers from the conference will be considered for publication in an edited volume following the conference.
Proposals are due by May 1, 2019. General registration for the conference will open in Summer 2019.
