Curriculum

The Supplementary Major in Peace Studies requires successful completion of eight courses totaling 24.0 credits: three required courses and five peace studies electives.

Electives are listed as either core or support, and peace studies majors must choose at least two electives from the core list.  The other three electives may be chosen from either list.  The following is an outline of the requirements for the supplementary major:

IIPS 20101 Introduction to Peace Studies 3.0 credits
IIPS 33101 Perspectives on Peacebuilding 3.0 credits
IIPS 43101 Peace Studies Senior Seminar 3.0 credits
2 IIPS courses from core list 6.0 credits
3 IIPS courses from core or support lists 9.0 credits

The Interdisciplinary Minor in Peace Studies requires successful completion of five courses totaling 15.0 credits: three required courses and two peace studies electives.

Electives are listed as either core or support, and peace studies minors may choose their electives from either list.  The following is an outline of the requirements for the interdisciplinary minor:

IIPS 20101 Introduction to Peace Studies 3.0 credits
IIPS 33101 Perspectives on Peacebuilding 3.0 credits
IIPS 43101 Peace Studies Senior Seminar 3.0 credits
2 IIPS courses from core or support lists 6.0 credits

Students interested in the program are strongly encouraged to take Introduction to Peace Studies first, as early as possible. Any interested student can enroll in this course without needing to declare the major or minor, although seats for seniors and first year students are limited in certain semesters and subject to additional restrictions.

Required courses may not be taken together in the same semester. Introduction to Peace Studies is a prerequisite for Perspectives on Peacebuilding, and both of those courses are prerequisites for the Peace Studies Senior Seminar. Core and support electives may be taken in any order and in the same semester as the required courses.

Courses taken at other universities or colleges (whether overseas or within the United States) can count only as peace studies electives and may not substitute for any of the required courses. Students may transfer a maximum of 6.0 credits from another institution toward their supplementary major, or a maximum of 3.0 credits toward their interdisciplinary minor.
