Announcing New Ph.D. Program in Anthropology & Peace Studies

The University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute has added a degree program in Anthropology and Peace Studies to its existing lineup of doctoral programs in History and Peace Studies; Political Science and Peace Studies; Sociology and Peace Studies; Psychology and Peace Studies; and Theology and Peace Studies.

The new program, a partnership between the Department of Anthropology and the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, will educate and train scholars in both anthropology and interdisciplinary peace research. Applications are now being accepted for students seeking to begin their studies in fall 2014. The deadline is Dec. 15.

The Kroc Institute launched the Ph.D. Program in Peace Studies in 2008 in partnership with the Notre Dame Departments of History, Political Science, Sociology, and Psychology. In 2010, the Department of Theology also became a partner in the joint Ph.D. program.

“Early on, we identified two measures of success,” said Asher Kaufman, professor of history and director of doctoral studies at the Kroc Institute. “We hoped and planned to add more partner departments at Notre Dame and to see Ph.D. students in peace studies win University fellowships. In both measures we have fared extremely well.”

“Adding Anthropology as our sixth partnering department is a marker of success. With its focus on the local and ‘from the bottom up’ approaches, the Department of Anthropology is an inseparable part of our vision to spearhead a new vision of peace studies at Notre Dame.”

“We’re excited to embark on this mutually beneficial and intellectually exciting collaboration between peace studies and anthropology,” said Agustin Fuentes, professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology. “We expect the students and their projects to be of the highest caliber and have substantive impact inside and outside of the academy.”
