Anu Chakravarty is completing her dissertation in the department of government at Cornell University on the political consequences of a state-initiated community-based trials process for genocide crimes in Rwanda. This project is based on 18 months of fieldwork in Rwanda and has been supported by fellowships from the Ford Foundation-funded Workshop on Transnational Contention, the Sage and Mellon Foundations, the Peace Studies Program and the Einaudi Center at Cornell. At the Kroc Institute, she is working on a comparative study to explore if the choice of truth commissions or trials in transition countries has a causal effect on different democratization trajectories.
Her primary area studies focus is on sub-Saharan Africa. She also has a secondary area specialization in South Asia. Her research interests include genocide studies, nationalism, social movements and contentious politics. She has presented her work at invited talks and conferences, including the annual American Political Science Association and African Studies Association meetings. She has co-authored a chapter in an edited volume and has two other publications in peer-reviewed journals. She has master's degrees from Cornell University (2004) and Jawaharlal Nehru University, India (2000).
