Occasional Paper No. 28:OP:1 (2007)
By Peter Wallensteen
Abstract
In his inaugural address as the Richard G. Starmann Sr. Research Professor of Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute, Peter Wallensteen considers the issues and actors that must be addressed for peacebuilding to be successful. He examines how both the causes of the most recent war and the nature of its ending impact the likelihood of success in peacebuilding and the potential for relapse into war. He also explores how local and international actors need to coordinate efforts to build sustainable peace, and the role of neighboring countries in peacebuilding. Wallensteen concludes by applying these principles to the current situation in the Middle East, deriving strategies for how an academic institution like the Kroc Institute can contribute to peacebuilding.
