Globalizing Human Rights: The Work of Transnational Human Rights NGOs in the 1990s

Occasional Paper #12:OP:4
by Jackie Smith, Ron Pagnucco, George Lopez

This paper summarizes the results of a mailed survey of transnational human rights organizations. The survey was sent to nearly 300 organizations, of which more than half responded. The paper reports on the geographic distributions of human rights organizations, their political activities, work with international agencies, organizational structures and resources, links with local NGOs, and their definitions of human rights goals. The study is part of a larger project to better understand how transnational NGOs influence global political and social change.

Jackie Smith, is a visiting fellow of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies; Ron Pagnucco is currently assistant professor of sociology at Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Maryland
