April 03, 2009 - April 04, 2009
Time and location:
Hesburgh Center for International Studies, University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame’s annual Student Peace Conference will take place on April 3-4, 2009, at the Hesburgh Center for International Studies. This free conference is officially sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, and is planned and directed entirely by undergraduate peace studies students of the University.

Every year the conference unites undergraduate and graduate students from universities and colleges across the United States and abroad with a spirit of peace, a desire to see a change in the world, and commitment to a rigorous, multi-disciplinary academic program focused on building international peace.

Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to announce Lisa Schirch, program director of the 3D Security Initiative and professor of peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, as this year's keynote speaker. Her work with the 3D Security Initiative promotes civil society perspectives on conflict prevention and peacebuilding in US security policymaking. With colleagues in the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at EMU, Schirch consults with a network of strategic partner organizations involved in peacebuilding activities throughout the U.S., Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Schirch has written five books, Little Book of Dialogue on Difficult Subjects, Little Book of Strategic Peacebuilding, Ritual and Symbol in Peacebuilding, Civilian Peacekeeping: Preventing Violence and Making Space for Democracy, and Women in Peacebuilding Resource and Training Manual: Part 1 and Part 2. She is also the author of numerous articles on conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Her current research interests include civil-military dialogue and the intersection of security and climate change, sustainable development, the media, and conflict prevention. She holds a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University.
