The 2018 Notre Dame Student Peace Conference Committee announces this year’s conference, "Toward Justpeace: Exploring the Intersections of Justice and Peace," scheduled for April 13-14, 2018, at the University of Notre Dame. This event is sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies.

As we endeavor to establish peace and envision a shared future with fewer harms against one another, we question how to most effectively address the conflict and violence of the past. We seek to understand how themes of justice can heal hurts of the past, promote positive peace in the present, and guide our actions in the future. Discussing how the principles of justice and peace interact with each other is pertinent for conversations about conflict and violence in communities and societies around the world, as well as in the United States.

Call for Proposals

The Conference Committee invites undergraduate and graduate students to demonstrate how their own research, practice or project explores definitions and themes of justice in the context of peacebuilding and/or how justice and peace may or may not be compatible. This year’s conference seeks to include presentations that reflect or highlight practice and experience as well as those based on theory and research. Students can propose innovative presentations of all types: research papers or posters; artwork or media projects; TED-style talks on practice; panel discussions; workshops; roundtable or “hot topic” discussions; or other project formats that would engage a peer audience on the topics of peace, justice, and peacebuilding.

Presentations can explore, but are not limited to, topics such as:

  • Environmental Justice
  • Conflict Transformation
  • Peace Negotiations
  • Restorative Justice
  • Systems of Punishment
  • Cultural Understandings
  • Role of Media
  • NGOs and Third Parties
  • International Law
  • Gender & Peace
  • Transitional Justice
  • Intersectionality of Conflict

All proposals should be submitted at http://tinyurl.com/peacecon2018 or via the conference website at http://nd.edu/~peacecon.

The deadline for submissions is January 22, 2018. Proposals submitted earlier may be given preference in the review process.
