The Kroc Institute has developed new internship partnerships with nongovernmental organizations in Israel and Palestine.
Beginning next fall, several master’s students in peace studies will spend the first semester of their second year working at one of the following:
Rabbis for Human Rights, in Jerusalem, an organization of rabbis from all streams of Judaism, which acts on the Jewish imperative to respect and protect the human rights of all people.
Holy Land Trust, in Bethlehem, which uses principles of nonviolence to strengthen and empower the Palestinian community to address challenges and create opportunities for the future.
Miftah, in Ramallah, which promotes democracy and good governance by engaging local and international public opinion and official circles regarding Palestine.
The Institute also has renewed its partnership with the Applied Research Institute of Jerusalem, which promotes sustainable development and the self-reliance of the Palestinian people through greater control over their natural resources.
Jerusalem has long been a field site for Kroc Institute students, who live at the University of Notre Dame’s Tantur Ecumenical Institute (pictured below), located on a hill in Jerusalem near Bethlehem.
“Israel-Palestine is an important region for students to see first-hand some of the most complex challenges of violent conflict and peacebuilding,” said Susan St. Ville, director of the master’s program. “We are so pleased that our students will be able to engage with these organizations that are doing highly important and innovative work in the region.”
As part of the two-year master’s program, every student has the opportunity to spend six months working at a leading organization focused on peace and justice. In addition to Israel/Palestine, the Kroc Institute has field sites in Uganda (Gulu); the Philippines (Mindanao); South Africa (Cape Town); and the United States. At the end of their first year in the program, students are matched with an organization that aligns with their professional interests and with the organization’s needs.
