Lee Tavis (D.B.A. Indiana University 1969; M.B.A. Stanford
1960) is Director of the Program on Multinational Managers
and Developing Country Concerns at the University of Notre
Dame. This program convenes study groups consisting of multinational
corporate executives; national, state, and municipal governmental
officials; representatives of international and indigenous
nongovernmental organizations; academics from a number of
disciplines; and representatives of international agencies.
Groups examine specific issues that involve multinational
corporate interaction with developing host societies. In addition
to several publications on business planning models, Tavis
has edited four books drawn from the seminars and research
he organizes on Multinational Managers and Developing Country
Concerns published by the University of Notre Dame Press and
he is author of Volume V, Power and Responsibility: Multinational
Managers and Developing Country Concerns (1997), as well as
a series of articles on the "developmental responsibility"
of multinational corporations. His work on developmental responsibility
has been supported by a major grant from the Rockefeller Foundation
and 32 multinational corporations. Tavis has organized and
participated in field studies in Brazil, Central America,
Colombia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Kenya, Korea, The People's
Republic of China, The Philippines, Mexico, and South Africa.
He is the recipient of four teaching awards at the University
of Texas and five at the University of Notre Dame. He and
his wife Sparky were co-recipients of a Hesburgh Presidential
Award in 1984. He received the 1993 University of Notre Dame
Faculty Award and the 1998 Reinhold Niebuhr Award for work
in social justice. Tavis has been a Fellow of the Kroc Institute
since 1991.
