Rev. William Lies, C.S.C. (Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh,
2003) is executive director of Notre Dame’s Center for Social
Concerns. As the community-based learning center of the University
of Notre Dame, the Center for Social Concerns offers students
a wide range of service and learning and research opportunities.
The programs directed by the center offer an array of for-credit
courses and seminars through many disciplines that include
service and immersion experiences locally, nationally and
internationally. The center’s practice is to incorporate
the Gospel and Catholic social tradition throughout its initiatives.
His research focus is on the religion and politics of Latin
America. His current focus is on the growth of Pentecostalism
in the Southern Cone, where he examines the impact of religious
competition on the Catholic Church’s relationship to the
state. He also studies the role of religion in democratization
and issues around religious tolerance and freedom. He has
consulted internationally in the areas of community and service
learning and responsible citizenship. He recently contributed
to the edited volume After Pinochet: The Chilean Road
to Democracy and the Market (University Press of Florida, forthcoming).
