Ruthann K. Johansen's literary scholarship examines the intersection of religion, myth, and literature. She brings the contributions of world literature to unmask the influence of psychological factors and religious traditions on issues of political violence, justice, and peace through her course entitled Images of War and Peace in Literature. She is the author of The Narrative Secret of Flannery O'Connor: The Trickster as Interpreter (University of Alabama Press, 1994) and Listening in the Silence: Reconstructing Life after Brain Injury (University of California Press, 2002). Ruthann K. Johansen's research on narrativity and selfhood investigates the therapeutic potential of narratives for bridging radical personal and political discontinuitites and for disclosing ethical dilemmas associated with the afflicted. She has been a fellow of the Kroc Institute since 1993.
