Viva Bartkus received her Masters
and Bachelors degrees in economics from Yale University in
1989. She completed her doctorate in 1993 in International
Relations at Oxford University while on a Rhodes Scholarship.
Her doctoral dissertation proposed a theoretical framework
to understand secession. Her book, The Dynamic of Secession,
published by Cambridge University Press, offers a general
explanation of the occurrence of secession, arising from
the comparative study of numerous historical examples of
secession and separatist activity. In 1993, she joined the
global management consultancy McKinsey & Company. During
the next ten years, she served leaders of the healthcare,
industrial and technology industries on strategic, operational,
and organizational challenges, the last four years as a partner
of the firm. In 2004, she joined the management faculty of
the University of Notre Dame business school. Her current
research agenda focuses on the ways in which communities,
organizations and societies build the networks, norms, and
trust required to create the social capital necessary for
collective action.
