Susan St. Ville earned her Ph.D. in systematic theology at the University of Chicago (1986). She also holds a master’s degree in social work and has worked as a therapist since 2002. Her research and clinical interests lie in the areas of trauma and peacebuilding, gender issues in war and peace, and the psychological effects of violence. She has been a lecturer in social work at Saint Mary’s College and a lecturer in theology at Notre Dame, where she also coordinated the Gender Studies Program. She has previous experience as assistant professor of religious studies at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, and as assistant professor of religion and philosophy at St. Francis College in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Her publications include Bodily Citations: Religionists Engage Judith Butler, co-edited with Ellen Armour (Columbia University Press, 2006), Transfigurations: Theology and the French Feminists, co-edited with C.W. Kim and Susan Simonaitis (Fortress Press, 1992), and numerous articles in the Encyclopedia of Catholicism.
