Jackie Smith earned her M.A. in Peace Studies and Ph.D. in International Relations at the University of Notre Dame (1995). From 1997 to 2005 she worked as assistant and associate professor in sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she helped develop that program’s emphasis in global sociology. In 2004-05, she was a visiting scholar at McMaster University’s Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition.
Smith is known for her research on the transnational dimensions of social movements, which explores how global economic and political integration influence the ways people engage in politics. Most recently, her work has focused on transnational social movements for global economic justice, and the World Social Forum process in particular. Social Movements for Global Democracy (2008, The Johns Hopkins University Press) examines relationships between globalization and social justice organizing, and it argues that movements should work to strengthen multilateral institutions that support human rights and environmental protection. In Global Democracy and the World Social Forums (2008, Paradigm Publishers) Smith and 11 co-authors help introduce what they call the “most important political development of our time” to a wider public.
Smith has also co-edited three other books on transnational social change organizing, including Coalitions Across Borders: Transnational Protest in a Neoliberal Era (with Joe Bandy); Globalization and Resistance: Transnational Dimensions of Social Movements (with Hank Johnston); and Transnational Social Movements and Global Politics: Solidarity Beyond the State (with Charles Chatfield and Ron Pagnucco). Her work has taken her to many sites of global organizing, including Prague, Quebec City, and Porto Alegre.
Smith has written or co-authored more than 45 articles and book chapters. Her articles have appeared in journals such as American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Mobilization, Human Rights Quarterly, International Sociology, Journal of World Systems Research, and Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly.
