Title
RELIGION
IN AFRICAN CONFLICTS AND PEACEBUILDING INITIATIVES: PROBLEMS
AND PROSPECTS FOR A GLOBALIZING AFRICA
March
31-April 3,
2004
Jinja
Nile Resort, Uganda
A
conference of the Program in Religion, Conflict and Peacebuilding
Sponsored
by
the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies,
University
of Notre Dame
In
contemporary Africa , the apparently
progressive and universalizing processes of democratization
and liberalization have been accompanied by an unprecedented
increase in religious revivalism, as well as conflict. Our
work examines the increasing salience of religion and religious
movements in public and political life, as well as changing
religious-state configurations. We thus generate new perspectives
on conflict and peace-building in the African context, while
taking account of the historical and cultural peculiarities
of diverse regions throughout the continent. Our major themes
are 1) Religion, African states, and the Crisis of Governance,
2) Multi-Religious Peacebuilding Initiatives,
3) Islamic
Activism,
4) the Politics of Indigenous Revivalism, 5) Media Access
and Representation, 6) Gendered and Generational Dimensions
of Religious Conflict and Conflict Transformation, and 7)
the Development of New Local-Global Religious Networks (including
the “NGO Factor”).
