Fashion is one key to understanding the complex relationship between the political and the apolitical in social movements. Jo Reger will discuss how contemporary feminists embrace and reclaim aspects of femininity and sexuality through politicized dress, drawing on theories from fashion, feminism, and social movements.
Reger received her Ph.D. in sociology from Ohio State University. At Oakland University, she teaches courses on the sociology of gender, social movements, sociological theory, and feminist theory. She edited Different Wavelengths: Studies of Contemporary Feminism in the United States (2005) and has published articles in Gender & Society and Qualitative Sociology. She currently is studying the contemporary women’s movement in the United States and working on a book examining three young feminist communities.
This lecture is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Social Movements and Social Change, the Kroc Institute and Gender Studies.
