Fr. Emmanuel Ntakarutimana
Kroc Institute Visiting Fellow

Fr. Ntakarutimana is director of the Center Ubuntu, in Bujumbura, Burundi, which serves vulnerable children and families traumatized by genocide and conflict in Central Africa. An expert in trauma healing, he has led more than 50 workshops to train trainers in psychosocial approaches to victims of war, torture, and other forms of systemic violence. He also has conducted extensive research on the reconstruction of the social fabric in Burundi.

Fr. Ntakarutimana has a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, and he has trained at the War Trauma Foundation in the Netherlands and the School of Psychology of the Kwazulu at Natal University in South Africa. At the Kroc Institute, he focuses on the importance of healing memories and dealing with the past in order to involve the Burundian population and engage the Catholic Church in the processes of transitional justice, peacebuilding, and reconciliation.
