Kristin Shrader-Frechette,
Kroc Institute faculty fellow, won the 2004 World Technology
Award in ethics from the World Technology Network (WTN).
She was honored at WTN’s International Summit in October
for her work in environmental and public health ethics.
Shrader-Frechette
is O’Neill Professor of Philosophy and concurrent professor
of biological sciences at Notre Dame. An award-winning teacher
as well as a researcher, she has published more than 350
articles and 14 books. Her writings have been translated
into 11 languages. Most of her work is in the philosophy
of science, normative ethics, probabilistic/environmental
risk assessment, and science policy. She is chair of the
Committee of Bioethics of the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and a member of the EPA Science Advisory Board.
The
WTN annually honors individuals and corporations from 20
different technology-related disciplines deemed to have
the greatest future significance and impact on society. Previous
ethics award winners were Harvard University philosopher
Daniel Callahan, who won the award for his work in biomedical
ethics, and Princeton University philosopher Peter Singer,
for his work in global food ethics.
