Fred Dallmayr in Religion in International
Relations, Fabio Petito and Pavlos Hatzopoulos, eds., (Hampshire,
England, Palgrave/Macmillan, 2003), 209-236.
Acknowledging
the upsurge of many kinds of spirituality, but also noting
the danger of market manipulation and a slide into pop psychology,
the essay seeks to retrieve central spiritual traditions
in two major world religions. Following a discussion of the
core meaning of "spirituality," two prominent types are differentiated
in both religions: a "gnostic" or knowledge-oriented spirituality,
and an "erotic-mystical" or agape spirituality. In the end,
the essay argues in favor of practical piety and an "everyday
mysticism" informed by agape traditions.
