Fred Dallmayr, in
Global Dialogue Vol. 3 (2001): 64-75
The essay seeks to make a contribution to Year 2001 which has
been officially designated by the United Nations as the “Year
of Dialogue among Civilizations.” The essay first discusses
the meaning of “civilization,” differentiating the term from
counter terms like nature and the divine. Next, the essay discusses
specifically the character and development of Western civilization.
Finally, relying on the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer, the essay
explores the possibility of a dialogue among civilizations arguing
that it has to be a multidimensional and ethically sensitive
dialogue.
