Historian and
Kroc Institute faculty fellow Richard B. Pierce has been
appointed chair of Notre Dame’s new Department of Africana
Studies. The department replaces the African and African-American
Studies Program and is expected to enhance the university’s
efforts to promote diversity and multi-culturalism.
A member
of the Notre Dame faculty since 1996, Pierce previously
served as associate director of the former AFAM program.
He specializes
in African-American, urban and civil rights history, and
examines social and political protest in urban environments.
